Solution-Dyed Fabrics

Lowepro's new bags are made from dope-dyed black fabrics and recycled linings/webbings to reduce water use and CO2 emissions.

Dope dyeing also called solution or spun dyeing, is a production technique to colour synthetic fibres such as acrylic, nylon, and polyester. This technique adds pigments to the liquid polymer solution before extruding synthetic fibres. Instead of traditional wet yarn dyeing, in which the yarn is knitted or weaved first into a fabric which is then dyed as a whole, dope-dyed yarn is the opposite. Traditional wet dyeing has created problems for both the environment and human health. Large amounts of chemicals and dyes are used in wet processing, wasting water and releasing dangerous chemicals into the environment. Using dope-dyed fabrics reduces greenhouse gas emissions, water usage, and chemical usage.
