The Panasonic Lumix G85 is the follow up to the G7 Series which is widely regarded to be an excellent series of cameras packed with features and customisable options to help you get the most out of your photography. A seamless fusion of 4K video and advanced photo functions, the G85 offers significant benefits for enthusiasts and professionals alike.

All Weather Design

Protected against splashes and dust the G85 introduces weather sealing at long last to the series. With a magnesium-alloy full diecast frame the camera is able to offer protection from the elements making it perfectly suited for outdoor shooting. When combined with a weather sealed lens the whole system becomes completely protected so you can shoot confidently in tough conditions.

16 Megapixel Sensor & Venus Processor

The core strength of the G85 is the merger of a high quality 16 megapixel Live MOS Sensor with Panasonics Venus Engine Processor to provide exception image quality and control. To produce even sharper images, the Live MOS sensor has the low pass filter removed and the processor works to reduce moiré. In addition, the Venus Engine provides greatly improved auto focus tracking of subjects and allows the camera to deliver a stunning 9 frames a second with up to 300 shots.

5-Axis Dual Body Stabilisation

Inside the G85 is an impressive 5-axis Dual Image Stabilisation system to ensure that hand held video is even smoother than before. A new high-precision gyro sensor inside the body allows you combine the camera with an optically image stabilised lens to achieve an extraordinary 5 stops of shake reduction. This means you can punch in close with a zoom lens to capture finer detail from far away and still retain sharp shots.

New Shutter Mechanism

Introducing an updated shutter which is electromagnetically driven means the camera boasts significantly reduced shot vibration when taking pictures, perfect for landscapes photography to reduce any shake. The new shutter should be able to last for more actuations with its improved design, and an electronic first-curtain shutter can be used for shooting up to 1/2000 to reduce wear and tear even more.

Next Generation 4K Functionality

The G85 shoots 4K video at a resolution equal to 4 times that of HD video enabling you to capture sharp footage at highest quality. It also has4K Photo, which you take advantage of the high resolution to open up a world of new photographic opportunities. The camera films at 24/25/ or 30p with an impressive 100Mbps data rate.

Video Live Cropping
By shooting in 4K video you are able to sacrifice some resolution to digitally stabilise your video footage in real time with the Live cropping feature. Because of the higher resolution of 4K you still have a full HD video file after it’s been steadied.

Post Focus Photo Mode
The revolutionary Post Focus option allows you to capture a scene and decide on the focal point later. The Post Focus combines the camera's existing Depth from Defocus autofocusing and movie capabilities to record roughly one second of MP4 video at 30 frames per second. During this recording, the camera's autofocusing system scans the lens around the subject, moving from the foreground to the background to cover the entire scene. In playback mode the focal point can then be selected by simply touching the point that you want to appear sharp. The camera automatically selects the optimum frame and gives you the option to export it as an 8-megapixel JPEG image.

Focus Stacking Photo
By using the same technology as the Post Focus Mode, the camera takes a video at 30 frames a second while automatically changing the autofocus from close to far to ensure that every bit of focus information is captured. Then in playback mode you can combine areas that are in focus from different shots together into the one shot. Perfect for Macro images or any other style of photography where all-round sharpness is key.

Photo Pre-Burst Mode
4K Photo Pre-Burst mode is great for unpredictable action. It sets the camera to continuously hold 30 frames in its cache one second before you press the shutter, compensating for your reaction time. Once the shutter is pressed, it takes another 30 frames, leaving you with an efficient 60 frames, saving space on your SD card and ensuring even the briefest moments can be captured faithfully.

Photo Batch Save
The new Photo Batch mode means that when you shoot a bursts of shots to capture fast movement like sports or animals then you can save up to 150 frames with just one button press. It is perfect if you want to be able pick through each shot taken to find that split second perfect moment.

Light Composition Photo Mode
Designed to help take photos of fireworks and other dramatic night scenes the light composition mode saves the brightest pixel from a collection of images to capture more impressive night sky photography.

Updated Focus Features and Controls

Making sure your shots are in focus and clear is one of the challenges of taking great images. The G85 helps you achieve accurate autofocus with an autofocus system that is both fast and customisable. It ensures that you can make razor-sharp photos that capture exactly what you want to.

Great Tracking Ability
With 49 autofocus points the G85 can accurately track moving subjects with ease and grants you the freedom to choose exactly where in the frame the camera focuses. The advanced focus tracking ability analyses the colour, size, and motion vector of moving objects for consistently sharp results.

Quick and Accurate
The camera uses an innovative Depth-From-Defocus (DFD) system to instantly calculate the distance to a subject then quickly fine-tune to focus to achieve critical sharpness in as little as 0.07 seconds.

Customisable Control
By utilising the power of the Venus Engine the autofocus system can be tweaked significantly to allow you to set the tracking sensitivity depending on your subject’s movement. This custom control allows you to fine-tune the autofocus so you can get even better results.

Low Light and Starlight AF
To help you take shots in darker lighting situations the G85 has been tweaked to be able to autofocus at -4EV, super convenient for long exposure street photography and darker conditions. It also features starlight AF for capturing subjects such as stars in the sky at night, a notoriously tricky subject for autofocus systems.

2.36 Million Dot EVF & 3-inch LCD Touchscreen

Composition and playback is available via a 2360k-dot OLED electronic view finder that has an increased magnification of 0.74x (35mm equivalent) or a 3-inch 1040k-dot tilt/swivel Touchscreen LCD. The 10,000:1 contrast and less than 0.01 second lag of the EVF delivers pixel perfect composition across a broad range of lighting scenarios, while the generously sized flip-out LCD is ideal for high and low angle shooting. The viewfinder also has a new power saving mode in order to increase the battery life twice over to ensure longer lasting performance.

Additional Features

The G85 also has a whole bunch more features packed inside it’s portable lightweight body.

Advanced Bracketing
It offers an extensive new range of advanced bracketing shooting options. Consisting of focus, aperture, exposure and white balance bracketing options it allows you to capture a huge amount of images with a range of different setting parameters so that you can have even more options with your photography. From Depth of Field to White balance you can now have added security that you have all your bases covered when you shoot with advanced bracketing.

Filters for Quick Creativity
With 22 custom filters the G85 allows you to quickly dial in a look or style whether it’s old film style sepia look or a hyper saturated colour style you can the freedom to shoot it quickly with the custom filters. The camera also features a classic L Monochrome mode for stylish black and white photography.

Wi-Fi for Connectivity
Ensuring that you can show off your images as soon as the take them, the camera has built in Wi-Fi to give you improved sharing ability. It can be connected to a smart device via Panasonics free Image App to transfer images and video files so they can be uploaded easily. The Wi-Fi also allows you to remotely control the camera from a distance away, unlocked even more creative angles and providing an enhanced control functionality.

Designed for Videographers
Panasonic have included a 3.5mm audio jack to ensure that adding an external microphone to the G85 will be straightforward and pain free. They have also enhanced the micro-HDMI port to be capable of providing a real-time image output to an external monitor in 4:2:2 at 8-Bit, while at the same time recording onto the SD card.

The Panasonic Lumix G 85 introduces some great new 4K features while maintaining loads of the old classic modes that made the previous range so popular. It’s a great small form factor camera that opens up a huge array of possibilities to photographers with its weather sealing and image stabilisation.
