Cutting Edge Capability

The Sony A9 is a fusion of innovative image technology that combines a stacked CMOS 24.2-megapixel full frame sensor with an updated BIONZ X processor and front end LSI for an impressive 20 fps of continuous blackout-free shooting. The camera performs up to 60 AF/AE tracking calculations per second to deliver accurate metering and focus results. The remarkable speed of the camera is complemented by a new 3.68 Million-dot EVF, dual SD card slots with a UHS-II slot, touchscreen autofocus, a 4K full pixel readout capability as well as a new battery that delivers more than twice the battery capacity of Sony’s previous full frame cameras.

World’s First Stacked Full Frame Sensor

At the heart of the A9 is Sony’s first EXMOR RS stacked full frame sensor with integrated memory, this revolutionary sensor surpasses conventional design to deliver up to 20x faster data readout speeds than previous full frame mirrorless cameras. The high-speed innovative design of the 24.2-megapixel sensor enables you to capture an impressive 20 frames a second with AF/AE tracking in the continuous drive mode for lightning fast performance.

High-Speed BIONZ X Image Processor

The vast amount of data pulled from the sensor is processed by an updated BIONZ X engine that uses a newly developed algorithm to reduce image noise across the entire ISO range, which is expandable to a massive 50-204800. This wide ISO range gives you the flexibility to capture images in dark conditions but also to shoot with faster shutter speeds up to an ultra-quick 1/32000 made possible with the cameras electronic shutter.

Remarkable Auto-Focus and Auto-Exposure Speeds

The sophisticated image processing power inside the A9 makes 60 auto-focus and auto-exposure calculations per second, ensuring your shots are always in focus and exposed correctly. It allows for a generous buffer of up to 362 JPEG images or 241 compressed RAW images. The camera can also capture 14-Bit RAW images for the absolute best in dynamic range and image quality.

Mirrorless Blackout-free Subject Tracking

Due to the unique combination of mirrorless design and high-speed processing power the electronic shutter on the A9 can eradicate the blackouts between shots while shooting experienced even with high-end DSLR’s. This works in conjunction with the cameras autofocus system to give you the ability to track and shoot your subjects with significantly improved accuracy.

4D FOCUS with 693 Phase Detection Points

Using 693 autofocus points that cover 93% of the image area you can be confident that no matter where your subject moves the AF system can track them. The 4D FOCUS system uses intelligent focus algorithms to analyse the direction and speed of your subject to predict their next move so it can deliver more in-focus shots. The system also boasts improved eye AF and support for A-mount Sony lenses that can be mounted with the LA-EA3 adapter.

Ultra-Silent Stable Shooting

With a new electronic shutter design the A9 can capture true silent images ideal for distraction free shooting at weddings, press conferences or while covering sensitive events like golf or classical musical performances. Traditional electronic shutters are limited by slow readout speeds that can create rolling shutter image distortion, making them unsuitable for capturing fast activities. The ultra-fast image processing ability of the A9 means you can capture with ease what previous mirrorless cameras couldn’t, and you can capture the shot in complete silence.

In-Body Stabilisation

The A9 has an advanced SteadyShot system built directly into the camera body that allows the stabilisation of any attached lens regardless of whether it is a vintage Russian manual focus lens or a modern ultra-zoom. The 5-axis vibration compensation offers 5 stops of stabilisation that can improve low-light shooting, video shooting as well as shooting with telephoto lenses. The stabilisation can be displayed in real-time on the live-view EVF while shooting.

3.68 Million-dot Electronic Viewfinder

The all-new Quad-VGA OLED display in the A9 is a high resolution 3.68 Million-dot EVF with a customisable refresh rate from 60fps to an ultra-quick 120fps. The fast refresh rate allows wedding, sport photographers and photojournalists to capture decisive moments with ease. With a double sided aspherical element for optimised sharpness and a ZEISS T* coating for reflection control the viewfinder also features a fluorine coating to protect against dirt.

Touch Focus 3-Inch Tilt Screen

Focus control has been enhanced with the touch to focus capability integrated into the 3-inch rear touchscreen LCD. This makes AF point adjustments quick and intuitive for both stills and video shooting. The 1.44 Million-dot LCD screen allows you to review images with fine detail and can tilt 107° upwards and 41° down for creative image composition.

4K Video with Full Pixel Readout

Super high resolution video capture is possible because the A9 records a full pixel readout of the sensor with no pixel binning to create 2.4 times the data required for 4K, that data is then oversampled to condense it to a 4K video file with incredibly sharp image quality. Taking advantage of the ultra-quick sensor read speeds also means any rolling shutter is greatly reduced and allows the camera to shoot an ultra-quick 120 fps for slow-mo footage at up to 100Mbps.

Dual Card Slots and New Battery

Support for dual SD cards is something most shooters demand so they can have backup protection when shooting for clients as well as save valuable time swapping cards. The A9 boasts two SD card slots, one of which is rated for ultra-quick UHS-II cards. Battery life is as important as storage space and Sony have developed a brand-new battery that can deliver more than twice the capacity of the previous battery models for even longer operation times, there is also the optional VG-C3EM battery grip available for extended shooting.

Comprehensive Control System

Professional shooters will appreciate the control dial and button layout of the camera which supports customisable back button focusing, has a dedicated drive and focus mode dial as well as a multi-selector joystick to shift autofocus selection points. The camera also introduces a new customisable menu that allows the arranging of 30 of your most used menu items for convenient access. It also features an Ethernet Port with FTP support so that you can securely transfer images over a wired LAN connection.

Lightweight and Robust Construction

Boasting a weather sealed design the Sony ILCE9 offers protection against dust and moisture, especially around the buttons and dials. The durable magnesium alloy construction provides a reliable and yet lightweight build that is roughly half the size of equivalent DSLR cameras. The camera also has a new lens mount that provides improved stability and durability when using telephoto lenses.

The Sony A9 is an absolute powerhouse that unapologetically redefines what mirrorless cameras are capable of and puts improved creative control squarely in the hands of professional photographers. With an extensive list of features the camera is more than capable of handling whatever shooting style can be thrown at it, and will undoubtedly be able to deliver the performance the most demanding photographers require.
