Canon’s EOS M5 is a stunning new addition to Canon’s series of mirrorless compact system cameras. DSLR Image Quality

Although small in size Canon have managed to pack in a massive CMOS image sensor with 24.2 Megapixels, making it easier to take high resolution images while on the go. The large DSLR size APS-C sensor delivers shallow depth of field as well as superior results in darker situations.

Built-in OLED Electronic Viewfinder

Canon have integrated a centrally placed electronic viewfinder to make shooting more natural. An impressive 2.36 million dots and approximately 100% coverage mean that it helps you see the whole picture. The location is optimised for handling and to ensures that the EVF sits directly on-top of the lens.

Modern EVF Features

The benefit of using an electronic viewfinder is the real-time representation of exposure compensation settings, white balance and other picture setting. That helps you see what the camera is seeing so you can capture your creative vision accurately. Combined with in-picture magnification to help with manual and fine tuning focus this gives you precision focus control.

Smart and Quick Display

The camera has intelligent orientation switching between landscape and portrait positioning so that your displayed settings rotate when you do, meaning you can seamlessly switch between shooting styles. Fast refresh rates of 120fps reduce lag to ensure that you can capture decisive moments with ease.

Advanced Dual Pixel Autofocus

The big upgrade to the M5 is the updated autofocus system which utilises Dual Pixel Sensor Technology to deliver lighting fast DSLR-level auto focus performance. Phase detection pixels are built into the CMOS image sensor which, when combined with the touch-screen allows you refine your compositions. You can touch and drag around the focus point within the frame to ensure razor sharp accuracy.

More Shots Faster and Sharper

The M5 is able to capture an incredible 9 frames of action per second in burst mode or, thanks to Dual Pixel AF, 7 frames a second while tracking with autofocus. This ensures you’re equipped to capture fast moving action and fleeting moments with ease.

Low Light Performance

As well as a bigger sensor the camera features an increased ISO that has been boosted to 25600 enabling the camera to deliver striking images with low noise. The improved ISO gives better low light performance and the ability to shoot stunning photos in any lighting condition.

Updated DIGIC 7 Processor

The ISO isn’t the only thing that’s been upgraded, the EOS M-5 uses Canon’s new DIGIC 7 Image Processor which allows for significantly faster shooting speeds in photo and video. The new processor also offers better image processing power to deliver more detail, richer tones and enables the cameras state-of-the-art autofocus features

Hybrid Stabilisation

Taking advantage of the updated DIGIC 7 processor the M 5 offers the best of both worlds with the combination of digital and optical stabilisation. The hybrid system features 5-axis stabilisation even if the lens being used does not have vibration control. When combined with a Dynamic IS lenses the system provides even better shake reduction allowing you to shoot smoother video footage.

3.2-Inch Tilting Touchscreen LCD

The EOS M-5 features exactly the same high resolution touch screen as Canon’s 1DX Mark II, one of the highest end cameras they make. Just like your mobile device the touchscreen means you can pinch to zoom your images when your reviewing and easily change your settings.

Huge Range of LCD Motion

As well tilting down 180° enabling you to take a selfie with the cameras self-portrait mode the screen can also tilt up 85° making it incredibly versatile for low creative angles.

Touch Auto Focus

While using the viewfinder the LCD touchscreen is transformed into a touch pad letting you control your AF point or zone with your other hand. It can be switched between an absolute and a relative touch position and you can also customise what area of the LCD is used so you can set it up exactly the way you want.

Drag Auto Focus

In the movie move the Drag Auto Focus Function can be used to perform a smooth focus pull between two subjects, it is a fantastic innovative way to have more control over your focus so you can deliver high quality films and video footage.

Enhanced Connectivity

The M-5 features a new low energy Bluetooth system to keep the camera connected to your smart device at all times, so you can switch on the cameras Wi-Fi from your mobile device. The camera’s Wi-Fi and NFC connections enable remote camera operation, viewing and copying of images with the Canon Camera Connect App. The camera also has a remote terminal allowing the use of remote triggers and controllers.

Video Features

As well as the improved focus control the M5 can shoot Full HD movies at 60fps for slow motion footage and features an external mic input. The Dual Pixel Auto Focus makes it easy to shoot high quality, in-focus video footage regardless of whether your travel blogging across the globe or just capturing a scene in your own backyard.

Extensive Control

The first Canon EOS M series camera to feature 4 control dials the camera offers photographers extensive control options. A Quick Control Dial is featured above and the right of the viewfinder and allows modification of settings normally accessed via the touch screen so you can change settings while composing the shot with the viewfinder.

Additional Features

Designed to make it easier to switch between Touch and Drag Autofocus modes the camera has a new front button to assist you to adapt your shooting style quickly. The Canon M-5 can convert multiple RAW files in-camera and there are 3 different automated time-lapse modes which can combine images into a movie. Using the EF-EOS M adapter the camera is also compatible with over 80 EF lenses with no loss in performance and quality.
