  • 24fps: The cinematic standard. Most feature films are shot and delivered at 24fps. It has a distinctive motion cadence that audiences associate with film.

  • 30fps: Common for YouTube and online content, particularly in North America. Slightly smoother than 24fps.

  • 120fps and above: Serious slow-motion territory. 120fps slowed to 25fps gives you 20% speed — genuinely dramatic slow motion for action, sport, wildlife, or creative shots.

Check what frame rates a camera offers at its highest resolution — some cameras shoot 4K at up to 30fps but require dropping to 1080p to access 120fps. Whether that matters depends entirely on what you're shooting.

Codecs and bit rates

A codec is the compression method used to record your video. Higher bit-rate codecs retain more detail and give you more flexibility in post — particularly for colour grading.

For most social media and YouTube content, cameras shooting in H.264 or H.265 at reasonable bit rates are perfectly adequate. If you're doing heavy colour work or delivering to broadcast standards, look for cameras that shoot in ALL-I (all-intra) codecs, ProRes, or — for maximum flexibility — raw formats.

The practical trade-off: higher bit-rate codecs create larger files that require faster memory cards and more storage and processing power. Make sure your computer can actually handle the footage you plan to shoot before committing to a raw or high-bit-rate workflow.

Log profiles and dynamic range

Dynamic range is the camera's ability to capture detail in both highlights and shadows simultaneously. It's measured in stops, and the more stops, the more latitude you have in challenging lighting.

Log profiles (S-Log, C-Log, L-Log, etc.) record footage in a flat, low-contrast way that preserves as much dynamic range as possible, leaving the colour grade to be applied in post. Footage shot in log looks washed out straight out of camera — that's intentional.

Log shooting is worth learning if you're doing serious colour work. But if you're not comfortable with colour grading and don't plan to invest in learning it, a camera that produces a nice-looking image straight from the card in a standard profile will serve you better in practice than log footage you don't know how to handle.

Autofocus for video

Subject tracking autofocus — particularly eye and face detection — has become genuinely reliable on current-generation mirrorless cameras from Sony, Canon, Nikon, Panasonic, OM System, and Fujifilm.
