There's a particular kind of quiet that comes with standing under a genuinely dark sky, camera on a tripod, waiting through a thirty-second exposure. Astrophotography and night photography reward patience more than almost any other genre — and once you understand the handful of settings that make it work, a clear night away from city lights becomes an opportunity rather than just darkness.

Why Try Night Photography

Night photography opens up scenes that simply don't exist in daylight — the Milky Way arching over a silhouetted horizon, star trails circling a fixed point in the sky, or a familiar landscape rendered completely unfamiliar under moonlight. It also teaches genuinely transferable skills: manual exposure, careful focusing, and patience with long shutter speeds all sharpen your understanding of photography more broadly.

Essential Gear

  • A wide-aperture lens: f/2.8 or wider lets in significantly more light, which matters enormously when your only light source is starlight. A wide-angle focal length (14–24mm on full frame) also captures more sky in a single frame.
  • A remote shutter release or intervalometer: Physically pressing the shutter button can introduce enough vibration to soften a long exposure. A remote release, or your camera's built-in timer, avoids the problem entirely.
  • Spare batteries: Cold nights and long exposures drain batteries fast. Bring more than you think you'll need.

Camera Settings for Shooting in the Dark

Aperture

Shoot as wide open as your lens allows — f/2.8 or wider if you have it. You need every bit of light you can gather.

Shutter Speed

For sharp, pinpoint stars rather than trails, the "500 rule" is a useful starting point: divide 500 by your lens's focal length to get your maximum shutter speed in seconds before stars visibly start to streak. A 20mm lens gives roughly 25 seconds; a 14mm lens gives closer to 35. If you want deliberate star trails instead, stack multiple long exposures together in post-processing rather than using one extremely long single exposure, which risks sensor noise and battery drain.

ISO

Night photography is one of the few situations where pushing ISO high — 1600, 3200, sometimes higher — is genuinely necessary rather than a compromise. Modern sensors handle this far better than older cameras did; test your specific camera's noise performance at a few ISO settings before you're out in the field relying on it.

Manual Focus

Autofocus struggles badly in near-total darkness. Switch to manual focus, use your camera's live view zoomed in on a bright star or distant light, and adjust focus by hand until it's sharp. Once set, tape the focus ring in place if your lens allows it, since it's easy to accidentally bump it in the dark.

Finding a Genuinely Dark Sky

Light pollution is the biggest practical obstacle to good astrophotography, and it's worth planning around rather than fighting. Getting even 30–60 minutes outside a major city dramatically improves what's visible. Apps and light pollution maps can help you find the darkest realistic location within reach, and checking the moon phase matters too — a full moon washes out the Milky Way almost entirely, while a new moon gives the darkest skies of the month.

Composition for Night Scenes

A sky full of stars is impressive on its own, but a foreground element — a tree line, a mountain silhouette, a person for scale — gives the image somewhere to land and turns "a photo of stars" into an actual composition. Scout your location in daylight if you can, so you're not fumbling to find a strong foreground once it's dark.
